Thanks to the joint efforts of officers from the Augustow City Police Headquarters, as well as their colleagues from Suwalki and Bialystok, it was possible to arrest a man suspected of a series of property crimes. The perpetrator turned out to be a 48-year-old resident of Piski County, who exploited the trust of elderly people by posing as a representative of a welfare institution.
Both incidents occurred in mid-October of this year in the Augustow county area. In each case, the thief's modus operandi was identical: the man used the appearance of professionalism and concern for the elderly to gain access to their homes and information about where they kept their cash.
Modus operandi and circumstances of the crimes
The first victim, an 85-year-old woman, welcomed a stranger into her home who introduced himself as a social welfare worker. The man justified his visit with the need to deliver firewood and a food package for the winter. During the conversation, he thoroughly questioned the senior about her life situation, including her savings. Trusting the "worker," the woman showed him where she kept her money.
According to the accounts contained in the material, after the conversation ended, both persons went outside the premises to check the wood storage location. At a certain point, the man informed the woman that he had to return home for a notebook he had left there. This brief window of time is when the theft took place. Only after the guest left the premises did the 85-year-old realize that the money, totaling nearly 30,000 PLN, had disappeared from its hiding place.
A second, similar event took place in another locality in Augustow county. This time, the victim was a 92-year-old resident. The thief repeated the scenario from the previous theft, posing as a social welfare representative and entering the senior's home. During the conversation, he determined where the woman kept her savings. Unlike the first situation, this time the man stole the cash directly in front of the victim, leaving the house with the stolen assets. The 92-year-old's losses were estimated at 10,000 PLN.
Arrest and charges
Cooperation between the three police headquarters allowed the identification of the perpetrator and the location of his residence. The 48-year-old was arrested and brought for investigation, where he was charged with two counts of theft. At the prosecutor's request, the court applied a preventive measure in the form of a three-month temporary detention for the suspect. The man's further fate will be decided by the court in the main proceedings.
According to the provisions of the Penal Code, theft is punishable by imprisonment for a period of 6 months to 5 years. The source material indicates that the man has prior convictions for similar crimes. In the event that recidivism is established, the court has the possibility of increasing the penalty by half, which means a potential threat of a significantly harsher term of imprisonment.
