The Marshal of the Sejm, Włodzimierz Czarzasty, was in Budapest, where he took part in the celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. The visit took place on 23 October 2026, the anniversary of events that lasted thirteen days and became a symbol of the fight for freedom from Soviet domination.
On the first day of his stay, the Marshal met with Ágnes Forsthoffer, the President of the Hungarian National Assembly. In discussions, which were also attended by the Head of the Sejm Chancellery, Marek Siwiec, the state of Polish-Hungarian relations and opportunities for their further development were discussed. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the rebuilding of contacts between the parliaments, pointing to Forsthoffer's recent visit to Warsaw in July.
After the official part, the Polish delegation toured the building of the National Assembly. The building dates back to 1896, and in its central dome, the insignia of royal power are stored, including the crown with its characteristically tilted cross.
The main celebrations were held during a solemn session of the Hungarian parliament. They were attended not only by members of parliament but also by numerous foreign guests, including heads of state and representatives of European institutions. Those present included Hungarian President András Baka, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President António Costa. Jens Stoltenberg, currently serving as the Norwegian Minister of Finance and former NATO Secretary-General, was also present. The attendees paid tribute to the victims of the revolution with a minute of silence.
