On Thursday last week, detectives from the Vth Police Precinct in Gdańsk, which serves the Przymorze district, arrested a 52-year-old resident of the regional capital. The man will face charges for abusing a dog, an incident that occurred on Wednesday evening on Burzyńskiego Street. The offense carries a potential penalty of up to three years of deprivation of liberty. The case was quickly solved thanks to cooperation between officers and the local community, as well as the use of video footage.
The incident occurred around 9:00 PM. According to a report filed on Thursday morning by a concerned woman, the man was treating the animal brutally. Police established that the perpetrator repeatedly dragged the dog across the pavement, lifted it up using the leash, and hit and threw the four-legged animal to the ground. After receiving information about the incident, officers secured a recording from the scene, which allowed them to quickly undertake operational activities.
To identify the perpetrator, the Gdańsk City Police Headquarters published the image of the man seen in the recording on social media. Additionally, the local police officer from the precinct held conversations with residents in the area. Information provided by residents helped identify the 52-year-old man. It turned out that the man was not the owner of the animal, but the partner of the woman who cares for the dog. The owner herself was unaware of the incident. After his arrest, the man was charged with animal cruelty.
The dog's health status was verified by a veterinarian. A veterinary medical certificate confirmed that the animal is in good health and has up-to-date vaccinations. The dog was returned to the care of its owner.
