The Central Statistical Office (GUS) has published comprehensive data on the number of registered unemployed persons in Poland, covering the period from January 1990 to September 2026. These statistics, expressed in thousands of people, illustrate long-term economic fluctuations and structural transformations in the labor market. The compilation allows for observing both sharp numerical spikes in the early years of the systemic transformation and the stabilization of indicators in the third decade of the 21st century.
The beginnings of transformation and rapid growth
In the initial stage of observation, i.e., in 1990, the scale of registered unemployment was surprisingly low. In January of that year, only 55.8 thousand registered persons were recorded. However, the dynamics of change in subsequent months were very sharp. By December 1990, this number had increased almost twenty-fold, reaching 1,126.1 thousand. Such a sudden increase reflected the beginnings of the formalization of statistics and the real effects of introducing market mechanisms into the economy.
The peak in the early 2000s
The highest values in the history of the presented data fall on the years 2003 and 2004. Particularly significant is February 2004, when the peak number of 3,294.5 thousand registered unemployed was recorded. It is worth noting that this value was almost equal to the result from April 2004 (3,294.5 thousand) and January 2004 (3,293.2 thousand). This period, coinciding with the time of integration with the European Union, was characterized by high uncertainty in the labor market. In subsequent years, a clear downward trend emerged. In 2006, the number of unemployed fell below 3.2 million, and in 2008, below 1.9 million. The financial crisis of 2008-2009 halted this decline, as seen in the 2009 data, where the indicator rose again to nearly 1.9 million in December.
Stabilization and decline after 2010
After 2010, the Polish labor market entered a phase of gradual improvement. In 2013, the number of registered unemployed was still around 2.1-2.3 million, but it decreased systematically in the following years. A breakthrough period was 2015, when, for the first time in the observed period (since 2006), the level of unemployment fell below 1.6 million in June. In 2021, during the pandemic period, seasonal fluctuations were recorded, but the general downward trend was maintained. By the end of 2021, the number of unemployed was 895.2 thousand, which was a result significantly lower than in previous decades.
The situation in 2022-2026
In 2022, further deepening of the recovery in the labor market was observed. The number of unemployed decreased from 927.1 thousand in January to 796.0 thousand in October. In subsequent years, the indicator fluctuated within the range of 760-950 thousand. In December 2025, there were 887.9 thousand registered unemployed. Based on available data for the first nine months of 2026 (January to September), a slight upward tendency or stabilization at a higher level than in the middle of the year is visible. In January 2026, 934.1 thousand were recorded, while in September the indicator was 907.0 thousand. It must be emphasized that the data for 2026 are incomplete and cover only the first three quarters of the year.
