The Warsaw City Transport Authority (ZTM) is launching the next phase of the project to green its interchange infrastructure. The institution has announced a tender for the execution of plantings at five Park and Ride (P+R) car parks, to be completed by the end of November 2026. The investment involves planting over 300 plants, including trees, shrubs, and perennials, which will improve the aesthetics and air quality in these locations. Meanwhile, work is underway to renovate the Połczyńska car park, transforming it into an ecological space adapted to climate change.

Scope of New Plantings and Schedule

ZTM's plans involve greening three car parks near metro stations and two facilities near railway lines. The designated locations include: P+R Metro Marymont, P+R Metro Wilanowska, P+R Metro Ursynów, P+R Anin SKM, and P+R Jeziorki PKP. According to the published guidelines, the contractor selected through the tender will be responsible not only for executing the work but also for the annual maintenance of the new greenery after its completion.

A diverse selection of species, tailored to the specifics of each site, has been planned for each car park. At P+R Metro Wilanowska, which will undergo the most significant visual change, three plane trees, eleven mountain pines, 'Blue Fortune' feather grass, and twenty-five common yarrow will be planted. At P+R Metro Marymont, the planting will include, among others, five Serbian spruces. In the vicinity of the Metro Ursynów station, two each of common spruce, white birch, and Bosnian pine will be planted.

The planting scheme also includes potted plants, such as little millet (notably at PKP Jeziorki), common ivy (Anin), and 'Palibin' lilac (Jeziorki). As indicated by ZTM, the new plants will serve not only an aesthetic function but also a practical one, contributing to dust collection and oxygen production in the urban space.

History of ZTM's "Green" Project

The initiative to green Warsaw's interchange car parks has been ongoing for several years. It began in 2022, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Warsaw City Transport Authority's activities. At that time, the first thirty trees were planted at P+R Metro Stokłosy, Wawer SKM, Ursus-Niedźwiadek, and Metro Młociny car parks. In subsequent years, the project was expanded: in 2024, a green wall was created at the P+R facility near Metro Wilanowska, and in 2025, approximately 660 plants were planted at the car park in Wawer.

The current work is a continuation of these efforts, aimed at making interchange car parks more user-friendly and integrating greenery with urban transport infrastructure.

Ecological Renovation of P+R Połczyńska

During the plantings at the aforementioned car parks, a comprehensive project to transform P+R Połczyńska into a modern, ecological space is being implemented at the Połczyńska car park. According to the plans, the facility will be equipped with elements adapting it to climate change. The scope of the investment includes wildflower meadows, rooftop gardens, plantings of trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses, as well as retention tanks and energy-efficient lighting.

A particular feature of this renovation will be a recreational space available to residents. On non-working days, approximately one hectare of the car park area is expected to function as an open urban park. The planned date for the renovated P+R Połczyńska to be handed over for use is December 31, 2027.

Future Plans

The Warsaw City Transport Authority states that the greening program will not end with the current investments. Next year, plantings are planned for two additional facilities: P+R Młociny I and P+R Al. Krakowska. This aims to further expand green zones at Warsaw's interchange car parks.
