Kolno police officers specializing in combating economic crime, together with detectives from the provincial headquarters, detained a 19-year-old Ukrainian citizen. The man is suspected of participating in a fraud committed in September in the Grabowo municipality. The detention took place in the Masovian Voivodeship. In the course of their operations, the officers determined that the detainee played the role of a so-called “money collector” in the crime.
The victim of the crime was a 72-year-old resident of the Grabowo municipality. According to the police report, a woman claiming to be her granddaughter called the senior citizen. The caller informed her that she and her mother had crossed the street on a red light, causing a driver to swerve and hit a utility pole. The woman was reportedly taken to the hospital, where she died. During the phone call, a fictitious bail amount of 125,000 PLN was presented, which would allow her to avoid a prison sentence. According to the findings, the suggested imprisonment sentence was to be 5 years.
During the conversation, the victim received instructions to pack her available funds into a plastic shopping bag and carry them out in front of her house. A man came to collect the money, to whom the 72-year-old woman handed over 45,000 PLN, 2,000 US dollars, and gold jewelry. The detained 19-year-old was charged with fraud. As reported by the police, investigators are now determining whether the suspect is connected to other similar cases.
