On Saturday, November 3 of this year, at approximately 13:00, an incident requiring intervention by officers from the 5th Police Station occurred in the area of Kraków's Podgórze. Local police officers were dispatched to the scene after receiving a report about a man throwing an axe towards a vehicle. The actions taken by the police led to the detention of a 26-year-old man, who behaved aggressively during the intervention and failed to comply with the orders issued to him.
The incident took place near an intersection in the Podgórze district. According to the police, the man did not hit the moving car with the axe, resulting in no victims. During the attempt to subdue the man who refused to comply with officer orders, the 26-year-old sustained a hand injury. Consequently, the intervening police officers provided him with first aid, and a medical rescue team was called. Despite the presence of medical services, the man behaved irrationally for a while. He was eventually transported to one of Kraków's hospitals for observation, where blood was drawn for toxicology tests.
After checking the detainee's identity, it came to light that he was a person wanted by the court to serve an outstanding sentence of 10 days of detention. As part of the court procedure, the 26-year-old exercised the option to avoid the substitute deprivation of liberty by paying the required fine. Investigative activities in his case are currently being conducted by the 5th Police Station in Kraków.
Criminal liabilities
The police actions may result in the 26-year-old being charged in two matters. First and foremost, the man may be prosecuted for exposing a human to a direct danger of losing life or suffering severe harm to health. For this type of crime, the penal code provides for a penalty of imprisonment of up to three years. Additionally, the fact that he possessed an axe at the time of the intervention may be recognized as an offense for possessing dangerous items. For such an act, a penalty of detention, restriction of freedom, or a fine of no less than 3,000 zloty is threatened. Final procedural decisions will depend on the evidence collected by the investigators.
