European Parliament President Roberta Metsola was on a visit to the Polish parliament on Friday, November 6, 2026. The main meeting was held with Marshal of the Sejm Włodzimierz Czarzasty, during which key challenges facing the European Union were discussed. The conversations focused on the security of Eastern Europe, the future of the Union's enlargement, and ongoing negotiations regarding the budget for 2028–2034.

Security and Solidarity in the Face of Threats

During the talks, the politicians focused on Russian aggression against Ukraine, recognizing Russia as a threat to the entire Union. Both parties declared their commitment to jointly combating these challenges. Marshal Czarzasty emphasized Poland's unwavering support for Ukraine, while Metsola assured of the EU's solidarity with Poland in the context of hybrid threats. Key difficulties cited included sabotage of railway lines, migratory pressure on the border with Belarus, and violations of Polish airspace by drones.

In her address to the deputies, the President of the European Parliament noted that Poland has long been warning Europe of the Russian danger, which was often ignored for years. She stated that testing Poland's security means testing the security of the entire Europe, and therefore both parties would respond to threats together.

The Future of the Union and the Budget

Further European integration was also a significant topic. Metsola presented the European Parliament's priorities in the negotiations over the new EU budget. The process of the Union's enlargement was also discussed. Marshal Czarzasty emphasized that Poland supports strengthening and enlarging the EU, including Ukraine's accession, provided that Kyiv meets all required criteria and that the interests of member states, including Poland, are properly secured.

Metsola appealed for the Union to be more competitive and innovative, better addressing the problems of citizens. She emphasized that in the face of an uncertain international situation, Europe needs a strong Polish voice and experience. She concluded her speech with quotes from Pope John Paul II: "Europe needs Poland, Poland needs Europe."

European Order of Merit

The conversation also covered the European Order of Merit, established by the European Parliament in May 2025 on the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration. Marshal Czarzasty thanked the Parliament for awarding this honor to Lech Wałęsa and Jerzy Buzek this year. He also nominated former President Aleksander Kwaśniewski to receive the Order next year.

Invitation to a Conference and Proxy Voting

Włodzimierz Czarzasty invited President Metsola to a conference on European security, to be held in the Sejm on May 10–11, 2027. The event is expected to gather the speakers of the parliaments of EU member states.

The day before the visit, the Sejm's Foreign Affairs Committee positively endorsed the draft amendments to the Act on Elections to the European Parliament. The amendment, initiated by Metsola, allows female members to vote by proxy for a specified period before and after childbirth, preventing the loss of voting rights due to maternity.
