The Sejm concluded its third attempt to remove Marcin Kierwiński from his position as Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration by rejecting the motion of no confidence. The vote, held on November 6, 2026, allowed the minister to remain in office at a time when his ministry is dealing with record-breaking migration challenges and internal security issues. Prime Minister Donald Tusk, defending Kierwiński's position before the deputies, emphasized that the ministry's actions contributed significantly to strengthening the protection of Poland's borders and improving crime statistics.
Border protection and decline in illegal crossings
In a speech from the Sejm rostrum, the head of government presented data regarding the effectiveness of the Border Guard's operations. As stated by Tusk, in the first half of 2026, Border Guard officers thwarted every attempt to illegally cross the border. The Prime Minister pointed to a drastic decrease in the number of such attempts, which stood at 65 times lower compared to the period of the previous coalition government's rule. At that time, according to Tusk, as many as 20,000 to 25,000 illegal crossings were recorded monthly on the Polish-Belarusian section. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister noted a three-fold increase in the number of people deported from Polish territory, which, in his words, indicates the effectiveness of the legal mechanisms applied.
A key element of migration policy was the decision to temporarily restrict the right to asylum. Tusk argued that this legal instrument was instrumentally used by states unfriendly to Poland, and in particular by the Belarusian regime, to organize illegal migration. The Prime Minister emphasized that Poland's solutions in this area are gaining support from other European countries struggling with similar problems, which strengthens Warsaw's position in discussions within the European Union. Despite the ongoing war in Ukraine and sabotage attempts organized, among others, by Alexander Lukashenko, Polish borders are currently considered the best protected in Europe. Tusk also stressed that Polish visas have ceased to serve as the easiest route for organizing illegal migratory flows, which was a common phenomenon during the tenure of the previous government.
Crime statistics and Police budget
The Prime Minister pointed to improved internal security in the country, despite the fact that Poland accepted millions of refugees from Ukraine after the outbreak of war. According to Tusk, the number of criminal and traffic offenses did not increase but decreased compared to the period before these people were accepted. The Prime Minister assessed that Minister Kierwiński effectively combated crime, extracting perpetrators even from hard-to-reach hiding places, and that attempts to destabilize the state through acts of sabotage and diversion occur relatively rarely due to the efficiency of the services.
He paid particular attention to the financing of the Police. In 2026, the budget for this force reached a record amount of 20.1 billion zloty, representing an increase of 5.9 billion zloty compared to 2023, when it stood at 14.2 billion zloty. However, Tusk reminded that increasing these funds was not an easy task, as President Andrzej Duda and PiS politicians blocked the transfer of billions of zloty from the European SAFE program. The Prime Minister emphasized that the government had to find ways to bypass this blockade to enable modern equipment for the Police and Border Guard, which he believes is crucial for further improving the security of citizens.
