On the night of October 25-26, 2026, Sopot police provided emergency assistance to a man walking on the roadway of Aleja Niepodległości. The incident occurred at approximately 4:35 AM, when officers noticed a person behaving unusually for such early hours. The patrol's quick response allowed them to support the senior, who was in a condition threatening his health and life.

Course of the Intervention

Junior Aspiring Officer Radosław Kotwicki and Sergeant Anna Składanowska immediately stopped to check on the man. During their conversation, it emerged that he was disoriented – he did not know where he was and could not provide his home address. The only thing he knew was his first and last name. Medical rescue teams arrived at the scene because the senior was visibly hypothermic and shivering. The man had no identity documents or phone on him, which made it difficult to quickly establish his identity. The officers contacted the duty officer at the Sopot Municipal Police Headquarters, who helped verify the identity and determine the residential address reported by the patrol.

The second vehicle from the patrol unit drove to the indicated address to contact the family. Upon arrival, they met the man's wife, who was surprised by the police presence. The woman was unaware that her husband had left the house and believed he had been sleeping in their apartment all night. After being examined by paramedics and his health stabilized, the senior was handed over to his wife's care, who ensured safe conditions in their home.

Appeal for Vigilance

This case is one of many examples where the vigilance of uniformed services helps prevent tragedy. In the autumn-winter season, characterized by low temperatures, rain, and early onset of darkness, elderly people, especially those suffering from memory disorders or dementia, are at increased risk. Difficulties in orientation, failure to recognize their surroundings, and the inability to independently find the way home can lead to serious health consequences.

The police appeal to residents to be attentive to people who appear lost, disoriented, or dressed inappropriately for the weather conditions. If such a situation is noticed, one should calmly ask about their well-being, and if the situation indicates a threat, immediately call the emergency number 112. If it is safe, it is worth staying with the person in need until the services arrive. Relatives of people struggling with memory loss are advised to ensure they carry information with a contact number for a caregiver and a current photo, which significantly facilitates identification in the event of a disappearance.
