Officers from the Criminal Division of the Capital City Command ended days of operational activities related to the knife attack on public transport passengers. Last weekend, officers arrested a 30-year-old man found within the forest complex in Bielany. The arrest was made after investigators determined his location, despite the fact that the suspect had been on the run since mid-October of this year.

The incident that initiated the investigation occurred in mid-October 2026 on a city bus in Warsaw. Two passengers, who are citizens of Ukraine, were attacked with a knife. The attack resulted in multiple stab and cut wounds requiring hospitalization. Due to the severity of the injuries, the man left the vehicle before the police arrived, beginning his escape.

National Motive and Recidivism

According to the investigation findings, the motive for the crime was the victims' national affiliation. The suspect was charged with three counts. Two of these charges are directly related to the attack on the Ukrainians. They concern the attempted causing of serious injury and the causing of injuries resulting in the impairment of an organ's function for a period longer than seven days. The prosecution indicates that these acts were committed in the state of recidivism. The man had previously served a prison sentence imposed by the District Court for Warsaw-Żoliborz, which was executed between April 2021 and February 2023.

The third charge relates to a separate case from August 2024. At that time, in one of the venues on Szekspira Street, the suspect allegedly issued criminal threats towards another man. Investigators established that the threats were of such a nature that they caused the victim a reasonable fear of their implementation. In this case as well, the act was charged in the state of recidivism. Importantly, the 30-year-old failed to respond to prosecutorial summons regarding this earlier proceeding, which likely accelerated his apprehension following the new incident.

Legal Consequences and Police Actions

The total criminal liability for the charged acts carries a prison sentence ranging from three to twenty years. At the prosecution's request, the court applied a preventive measure of temporary detention for a period of three months. The investigative activities are overseen by the District Prosecutor's Office Warsaw-Żoliborz.

The operational work to apprehend the perpetrator was demanding. After establishing the man's identity and place of residence, police verified information and analyzed evidentiary materials for many days. They determined that the 30-year-old was staying in the forest complex in Bielany, where he was hiding from law enforcement agencies. Intensive action by officers ultimately led to his arrest in the weekend prior to the publication of this communication.
