Warszawska Kolej Dojazdowa (WKD) has launched a repeat tender for the preparation of a project for the reconstruction of Warszawa Raków station. The deadline for submitting offers is 12 November 2026. The investment, aimed at adapting the infrastructure to contemporary standards, will be carried out in cooperation with the City of Warsaw (m.st. Warszawa) and the Mazovian Voivodeship. It is a key step in the modernization process of this part of the rail network, focusing primarily on increasing accessibility for passengers with limited mobility.
Current infrastructure problems
As sources indicate, the current technical condition of Warszawa Raków station significantly falls short of requirements regarding comfort and safety. The existing platforms are low, narrow, and subject to degradation, making them difficult for most passengers to use. An additional problem is the lack of a ground-level connection between the platforms. To cross to the other side of the tracks, passengers must use the overpass along Łopuszańska Street, which connects to the station solely via stairs.
This configuration creates a significant architectural barrier for elderly people, people with disabilities, and parents with children in strollers. The situation is complicated by the fact that bus stops are located on the overpass. This limits transfer possibilities for people with limited mobility who cannot use the stairs, making the transfer between rail and urban transport complicated, and in some cases impossible.
Scope of planned works
The reconstruction project assumes a comprehensive change to the platform layout. Plans include the complete demolition of current platforms and the construction of new structures with better technical parameters. The new platforms will be longer, wider, and higher, which is intended to improve safety and the convenience of boarding and alighting from trains.
A key element of the investment is the removal of communication barriers between the sides of the tracks. A ground-level pedestrian crossing is planned to connect both platforms, eliminating the need to use the stairs on the overpass. In parallel with the pedestrian crossing, a bicycle crossing will be built, along with connections to the existing network of bicycle paths in the area. According to sources, plans also include the designation of a separate crossing, which aims to solve the so-called "bicycle teleport" problem and facilitate cycling along Łopuszańska Street.
Public transport support
As part of the modernization, lifts are planned to be built connecting the bus stops on the overpass with the rail station. This solution is intended to directly contribute to the integration of public transport in the area, enabling people with limited mobility to transfer safely and conveniently between buses and SKM trains. The current situation, where the stops on the overpass are separated from the station by the barrier of stairs, hinders the functioning of this transfer hub.
The investment is phased. The current tender covers only the preparation of the technical project for the reconstruction. As the organizers note, the preparation of documentation is the first step towards eliminating architectural barriers and improving accessibility in the Warszawa Raków station area. The next stage will be the actual implementation of construction works in accordance with the approved project.
