The Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK), in cooperation with the Trade Inspection, completed an inspection of popular products for the youngest consumers. The inspections covered 12 models of baby cribs, including travel versions, as well as 17 models of pacifiers along with their holders. The main objective of the actions was to verify the compliance of these products with safety requirements, which are crucial for the health and lives of children.
Hazards in cribs and pacifiers
The analysis showed that four of the tested crib models had significant structural defects. These malfunctions created a direct risk of a child falling out of the crib or having their limbs or head trapped. Such irregularities can lead to serious injuries, making their detection key to protecting consumers.
In the case of pacifiers, inspectors paid particular attention to accessories, specifically the holders. It was found that two of the tested models had dangerous parameters. They were too long, too thin, or equipped with beads that were too small. These physical characteristics generated a real risk of choking or strangling an infant during the use of the toy or pacifier.
Legal consequences
Administrative proceedings have been initiated against the manufacturers or distributors of the products in which significant defects were detected. These processes are currently ongoing and may result in financial penalties. The maximum penalty provided for the detected irregularities is 1 million PLN. Another potential consequence is the mandatory withdrawal of faulty goods from commercial circulation, which would prevent their further sale.
