The 'Zakątek Weteranów' (Veterans' Corner) Association, the only organization of its kind in Europe providing a peaceful retirement for animals from uniformed services, has launched a fundraising campaign for the development of its new headquarters. The organization, operating under Article 20 of the Act of 24 April 2003 on Public Benefit Activity and Volunteering, currently cares for over 20 dogs and 8 horses that have been retired from service in the Police, the Army, and other security forces. The headquarters is located in Gierłatów near Września in the Greater Poland Voivodeship, where the association has held a large plot of land with outbuildings for two years, but these buildings require urgent repairs.

Infrastructure Status and Planned Investments

According to the founders, the land and buildings acquired two years ago are in a condition that prevents their further use. The main issues are ruined roofs and the need to reinforce the building structures. The association emphasizes that until now it has relied on the hospitality of Ms. Krystyna Nowakowska, who lent space for the statutory purposes, but now plans to secure the conditions for the animals independently.

Planned investment actions include a thorough renovation of the facilities, the erection of new enclosures, and the fencing of runs and paddocks. According to the organization's estimates, the total cost of these works and infrastructure investments for the animals is approximately PLN 2 million. These funds are not available in the association's budget, so the organization is appealing to donors for contributions that will allow for the creation of a safe and dignified sanctuary for its wards.

Legal Context and Activity Funding

The association refers to recent legal changes; for two years, a pension entitlement has been in force for animals under the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration. Funds from this source are primarily allocated for food and veterinary care for retired animals. However, it should be noted that not all wards of 'Zakątek Weteranów' are awarded such a pension, and additionally, the costs of maintaining the land, utilities, and current repairs still burden the organization's budget. Association members, mostly former and current officers of the Greater Poland Police, emphasize that their mission stems from the need to support animals that often cannot find shelter with their former handlers or riders due to personal or health reasons. To date, the organization has also participated in the work of a parliamentary commission regarding regulations on the status of retired service dogs or horses.
